Umnyama (Rainbow) Park

Many poor South Africans have been waiting years for a good quality and affordable home in a safe neighborhood. But even if you have a job as a teacher or policeman, it's not much better. Umnyama Park, !Xhosa for Rainbow Park, is a new multicultural neighborhood with 850 homes for those with the lowest incomes and for the middle income 'gap market'. WeLoveTheCity created the development plan and also assisted Dr. Beyers Naudé Municipality, where the neighbourhood is located, with the planning procedures. Construction of the 1st phase will start in 2017; this involves building 250 homes that are comfortable and energy-neutral. In addition, every drop of rainwater is collected because it's in the middle of the Karoo - one of the driest regions in Africa.

Umnyama Park is the concrete result of the twinning between the South African and Dutch municipalities, made possible by VNG International. Buffalo City (East London) will apply our lessons learned in Duncan Village, one of the largest slums in South Africa. WeLoveTheCity is currently working on a plan of action for participation and implementation.
