Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme

Online platform and e-learning for an inclusive city

Cities in developing countries are growing fast. One in three urbanites lives in a slum. The Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP) from UN-Habitat, financed by the European Commission and ACP, has the goal of improving the lives of slum dwellers in 79 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. Each country forms a team of local experts that, together with residents, tackles problems at the national, municipal and neighbourhood levels.

WeLoveTheCity developed an online platform in which local experts from different countries exchange experiences and knowledge with each other. We also created e-learning courses to familiarize experts with the structured PSUP method, which consists of three steps: (1) Urban profiling, (2) City-wide strategy & action planning, and (3) Pilot implementation. UN-Habitat and WeLovetheCity are currently preparing the work program for 2016-2018, in which the online platform and e-learning will become even more important.
